Castle is situated in the picturesque victorian seaside town of Clevedon in North Somerset The castle is listed in Pevsners encyclopedia and quoted as a remarkable piece of ornamental planning Also quoted in other publications as one of the countrys earliest examples of romantic or revivalist Gothic It was built in a castellated and fortified style with dramatic effect in mind rather than defence The site is recorded in The domesday book as belonging to Gunni the Dane The current construction was started around 1620 for a Lord Poulett a local wealthy Land owner Unfortunately at around this time the English civil war began which led to lord Poulett having to support the royalist cause This meant going into battle with the king against the puritan Oliver Cromwell Poulett was taken prisioner at the Battle of Exeter in Devon. With oliver Cromwell and his army successfuly deafeating the royalist army of king Charles Lord poulett was released but had to forfeit his lands,Walton castle then was left virtually empty for the next 300 years.
